http://z.about.com/d/dc/1/G/Q/e/screengreen.jpgCome join Washington DC, BOINC for a view of Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind. If you have a SETI@HOME t-shirt, be sure to bring one. I will be down there right after work around 4pm with a cooler and lawn chair. Please let me know if you are coming so I will reserve extra space.

I will try to bring a big sign, but it will be difficult to find me unless you have a phone. If you RSVP I'll send you my number. Hope to see you there!

People should come because they Like SETI@HOME, IBM World Community Grid, Folding@Home, Rosetta@Home.

Among high performance computing, graphics processor units are a hot topic. Some of our members are especially interest in CUDA programming with NVIDIA cards.

If you are a scientist interested in computational problems, some of our members are involved in grid computing projects. We can help you get started in developing one of your own. We also have an interest in the distributed thinking approach to solving scientific problems as demonstrated by the Bossa middleware.

Among my own research interests are molecular docking, protein folding, molecular dynamics and quantum mechanical analysis. I have spent 2 years learning about the BOINC middleware and integrating scientific applications.

Come join us. There is a lot to talk about.

Do you know what BOINC is? There are many ways to answer that question. A simple answer is it gives the public the opportunity to participate in scientific research projects. Come meet people active with BOINC in the Washington DC area. Many of our meetup members have recently traveled the World and met with scientists collaborating on these research projects. Some of us are developing our own projects. We would love to chat over a beer and share our experiences.

Several of us will be attending the inaugural East Coast BOINC meeting on August 29th. If you live in the DC metro area and wish to attend, please register with Dr Taufer. Space is limited. Perhaps we can arrange carpooling to this event together. It takes roughly 2 hours from DC.

Introductions
Follow up on group goals
Continue to define our group's mission
Discuss a number of questions.
Should we invite IT recruiters to our events?
How can we get media to pay attention to BOINC?
Is it possible to eventually do parallel computations on BOINC?
Can we make it easier for a scientist to setup a project?

For our inaugural meeting I am planing a casual dinner at Clyde's of Gallery Place. Expect to pay $11-$20 for your entree. Clyde's has a very nice ambiance and their food is a reasonable price. Plus Gallery Place is just 2 stops on Red Line from Union Station. Convenient for any out-of-towners.

If you have something else in mind, I am flexible about switching dates and venues.
