Please join us for the first New York OpenAFS User Group meeting on 17 January 2008 at 6pm.
The New York OpenAFS User Group provides a forum for OpenAFS Administrators, End Users, and Developers to meet to discuss OpenAFS usage, internals and futures.
The January meeting will feature a presentation by OpenAFS Gatekeepers Derrick Brashear and Jeffrey Altman on "Host Callback Interface Tracking". The presentation will explain the magic of AFS callbacks and how the file servers manage the callback registrations and the client hosts they are issued to. This will be a technical discussion describing the internals of the file server and the UNIX and Windows cache managers. Callbacks provide AFS clients with the ability to safely cache file data and status information locally with the knowledge that if the status information changes, the file server will notify the client and permit data consistency to be maintained. On the other hand, maintaining the callback state information is challenging given the existence of network address translator and firewalls that provide limited lifetime port maps and mobile clients that migrate from address to address. Ample time will be provided for questions and answers.
After the presentation the Gatekeepers will discuss on-going development. Finally, the floor will be opened to all attendees to meet each other and share their OpenAFS experiences.
